Lab 3: Investigating the Serial Position Effect
Models of Memory
A consistent feature of almost all models of human memory is the idea that human memory can be subdivided into several sub-processes that differ in terms of their capacity, duration and the encoding of the information they contain. Typically such models make provision for three memory processes:
• Sensory Memory
• Short Term Memory (STM)
• Long Term Memory (LTM)
Sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory differ in their capacity (the amount of information they can hold) their duration (the time they can hold information for) and also how information might be lost from the store (known as forgetting).
