Part D Question 4 — Advanced Question
Consider the strategies for scheduling processes (jobs) in a single processor system.
With a single processor system, this question explores how the processor manages all current running processes ready to be executed?
(a) Explain the purpose of the scheduler and despatcher in an operating system?
(b) Describe the basic operations of the following algorithms:
i. First-Come, First-Served (FCFS) Scheduling
ii. The Round Robin (RR) Scheduling
iii. Shortest Job-First Scheduling (SJF)
iv. Priority Scheduling
c) These algorithms are either non-pre-emptive or pre-emptive.
Explain what these terms mean and determine which are non-pre-emptive or pre-emptive.
A bibliography should be included as an appendix at the end of your report.
