The diameter of aluminum alloy rods produced on an extrusion machine

Question 1:

The diameter of aluminum alloy rods produced on an extrusion machine is known to have a standard deviation of 0.02 inch. The quality engineer suspects that the mean rod diameter is less than 0.52 inch, and he collects a random sample of 100 rods which has an average diameter of 0.5 inch.

a) Test the hypothesis that the mean rod diameter is less than 0.52 inch at significance level of 0.05.

b) Find the p-value for this hypothesis test.

c) Construct a 95% confidence interval corresponding to the hypothesis test and determine whether this interval supports or rejects the engineer's suspect.

Hint
A p-value measures the probability that an observed disparity happened by random chance. When deducing the hypothesis test, statistical significance of the observed difference is higher when the P-value is lower. P-value for the hypothesis testing is used as an alternative of the pre-selected confidence levels...
