Question 4
Using the stata table answer the following question
a) The economic contraction that resulted from the public health restrictions and countrywide lockdown by April 2020 lead to what many have called a "She-cession". Calculate the labour force participation rate, the employment to population ratio and the unemployment rate separately for men and women. Is the She-cession a valid statement in Canada based on comparing these three labour market indicators for men and women?
b) To get a sense of the economic recovery in the labour markets and the prevalence of She-cession since the start of the countrywide restrictions in March 2020, you want to compare the rates calculated in part a) with the rates from more recent months of the LFS data. You could for example obtain, tabulate and compare the 2020 rates from part a) with the rates from the February or April 2021 LFS or the very latest August 2021 LFS (released on Friday September 10, 2021). Assume you are time constrained and can download only one month of LFS data in 2021 to compare with, which month of 2021 would you use and why?
c) Download the LFS data for the month you chose in b). Calculate the LFP rate, the employment to population ratio and unemployment rate separately for men and women and compare with your results in a). What do you conclude?
