Use Stata to produce frequency tables with and without value labels

PART B: STATA

This exercise is to be attempted using the Stata software. The data referred to below are stored in the 2016 Australian Election Survey. This is the data file that we have been accessing during tutorial sessions. REMEMBER TO OPEN A LOG FILE AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR STATA SESSION AND INCLUDE AN ELECTRONIC COPY OF YOUR LOG FILE WITH YOUR ASSIGNMENT. THE LOG FILE IS AN APPENDIX, IT IS NOT USED IN LIEU OF FULLY ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS IN YOUR WORD DOCUMENT (THIS MEANS YOU SHOULD BE

INCLUDING RELEVANT STATA OUTPUT AS PART OF YOUR ANSWER IN THE DOCUMENT – NOT JUST THE LOG FILE).

4. Use Stata to produce frequency tables with and without value labels, for the variable E6_6 measuring whether respondents agree with the statement “terminally ill patients should be able to end their own lives with medical assistance”. What are the value labels corresponding to the lowest and highest scores for this variable? Summarize this variable to find the sample mean and standard error.

5. Use Stata to compute a 95% confidence interval for agreement with the statement “the death penalty should be reintroduced for murder” (E6_1). Interpret this interval. Now compute a 99% confidence interval. How has the width of this interval changed and why.

6. Using Stata, test the null hypothesis that Australians believe that “abortion should be allowed only in special circumstances” (E3). Write down the null hypothesis, the test statistic, the p-value, and state your conclusion.

7. Tabulate the variable E6_6 by whether or not the respondent is a member is male or female (H1). Carry out an independent samples t test of E6_6 by H1. State the null hypothesis and determine if the hypothesis can be rejected or not. You can also use the reported CI’s to determine if there is a gender difference present. Interpret the CI’s appropriately.

8. Do a t-test for the mean difference in beliefs about the following two statements; terminally ill patients should be able to access medical assistance to end their life (E6_6) and the death penalty should be reintroduced for murder (E6_1). Interpret your results explaining how you have reached your conclusion.

9. Produce a table containing attitudes towards abortion (E5) and agreement with the statement “terminally ill patients should be able to access medical assistance to end their own life” (E6_6). Ask Stata to also produce a Chi Square test statistic. Report whether these two variables are independent

10. Consider all that you have learned about opinions about the various ways that the government could regulate death and dying (as punishment via the death penalty, abortion, and assisted dying for terminally ill patients). What do you think are the two take home messages from what you have learned from the Stata results above?.

Hint
StatisticsThe null hypothesis is a type of hypothesis that is used in the statistics which proposes that no statistical significance exists in a set of given observations and also attempts to show that no variation exists between the variables or that a single variable is no different than its mean. It is also presumed to be true until statistical evidence nullifies it for an alternative hypothesi...
