"WBS or a work-breakdown structure, is a deliverable-oriented breakdown of a project into the smaller components and is a key project deliverable which organizes the team's work into the sections that can be managed. The WBS element can be a data, product, service or any combination thereof. It also provides the necessary framework for the detailed estimation of cost and control and also provides the guidance for schedule development and control.

Basically, it is a hierarchical and incremental decomposition of the project into phases, deliverables and work packages, i.e. a tree structure that shows a subdivision of effort which is required to achieve an objective like a project, program, and contract. And, in a project or contract, WBS is developed by starting with the end objective and then successively subdividing it into components manageable in terms of duration, size and responsibility, which include all the necessary steps to achieve the objective."
