You operate a bookkeeping business and have been engaged to act as the Payroll Clerk for Plant’s Galore Nursery Pty Ltd which is opening from 1 April 2019 at 215 Springflower Road, Greenfields Qld. It is your role to research the pay and entitlements for the new staff members who will start work from that date. The staff is made up of: 

Mr Ian Hanson Director and Manager of the business 

Mr Steven Lee         Full-time Horticulturist and Assistant Manager

Ms Angela Rafti Full-time cashier/shop assistant

Mr Troy Denver Casual Nursery Assistant

Mr Hanson is paid under a salary package of $60,000 per annum which is in excess of the Modern Award. The remaining employees will all be paid in accordance with the applicable Modern Award.

Details of the roles and responsibilities of each position are contained in the Organisational Policies and Procedures manual located at Appendix B. This also sets out all the procedures regarding processing of pays, payments to employees and maintenance of payroll records.

Step 1

Your first task is to establish the correct pay rates for each of the above employees. Take the following steps to complete this task:

1. Refer to www.fairwork.gov.au and determine which Modern Award applies to the employees of Plants Galore Nursery. Write the number and title of the award here:

2. For each employee refer to their Position Description in the Organisational Policies and Procedures. Match the duties as closely as possible to the appropriate Classification level in Schedule B of the Modern Award. Write below what Grade of duties you believe each employee is performing:

Answer the following questions relating to other employee entitlements that will also apply to employees of Plants Galore Nursery:

1. Explain the difference between being paid on a salary basis compared to being paid on a wage basis.

2. What leave are full time employees entitled to under this award?

3. In relation to Superannuation Guarantee entitlements explain:

a) How much is payable for each employee?

b) What is Ordinary Time Earnings?

c) Explain what the Superannuation Guarantee Charge is and how it is calculated?

4. Ms Rafti has recently emigrated from India. Her work skills and English are excellent but the manager wishes to ensure there is no discrimination in the workplace. Research the following website and list 3 practical steps he could take immediately to promote a fair and productive workplace:

5. Explain the WorkCover obligations Plants Galore Nursery will have in relation to the employees. 

Step 3

You are now required to review the timesheets & Leave Applications (Attached at Appendix A) for the first 2 weeks of April in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

1. Check each timesheet to ensure that:

hours have been correctly calculated

totals are correct for normal hours, overtime and any leave taken

a leave application has been received for any leave taken

timesheets have been correctly signed and dated by employees

List any errors that are detected below:

2. Make the necessary corrections to the timesheets, assuming that the start and finish times listed by employees are correct.

3. Once satisfied that the timesheets are correct you should sign and date them as the authorised person.

4. Confirm how and where timesheets will be filed in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
