1 Context
Your company submitted a proposal to an international development fund program to develop a system for managing water consumption. The system is to be used by a partner company located in South America. The local company will install the system to serve initially 10 000 households. The estimated cost of the project is $1.2 M. The program pays you $800 K to develop the system. Your partner covers the remaining cost, which includes cost of the devices, installation, and support for three years—you will give them the software that you will be developing. The local company expects to extend the project, if successful, to serve 1M households in the next five years. You have exclusivity on the modification of the system, used devices, and support. (They must buy these services and parts from you.)
2 Main Requirements
The main requirements of the system are:
1. Remote control of the water valve of the houses; that is, remote opening and closing of the pipe.
2. Measure the water consumption of the houses.
3. Send frequently the water consumption of the houses to the central system using mobile network, e.g., every 5 min unless consumption is zero.
4. The households can monitor in real-time their water consumption.
5. City representatives can visualize statistics about water consumption by neighborhood.
6. Generate invoices for water consumption to the households.
7. Force reduced water usage for households (close partially the pipe) who do not pay their bills.
8. Export anonymized data for data analytics; that is, replace ID, names, and addresses of customers by codes.
3 Deliverable
The system consists of a (1) device that controls the water pipe and measures the water consumption and (2) a central service to manage water consumption.
The deliverables are
1. A design document and project plan.
2. A device that controls the water pipe and measures the water consumption.(You will buy the hardware but you will develop the software that will be installed on the device.)
3. A central service to manage water consumption.
4. A mobile app for the households to monitor in real-time their water consumption.
5. A module to export anonymized water-consumption data based on given criteria.
