Problem 3
Using the commercial software MSC Marc Mentat, solve the problem 13.36 from the textbook. Assume conductivity k = 400w/m ∙ K, mass density p = 8900 kg/m3 and specific heat c = 390 J/kg.K.
Part 1. Steady state For the steady state report provide the following:
1) screenshot of the mesh (use more than a hundred elements)
2) screenshot of the temperature distribution (make sure to include the color scale)
3) number of degrees of freedom, number and type of elements used
Part 2. Transient heat transfer Assume the entire body has the initial temperature of 300 ℃. Simulate the first 60 seconds with 1 second constant time step. For the transient heat transfer report provide the following:
1) screenshot of temperature distribution at time instants t = 0p, 30p, 60p on the same page.
2) plot of the temperature distribution along the top surface at t = 60p. Overlay with the plot on the same surface obtained from the steady state solution (use Excel).
3) plot of the temperature vs time for the midpoint of the top surface.
4) answer to the following question: is 60 seconds enough time to reach the steady state? If not, how long before the steady state?
