Your group will submit a proposal for a Safety Improvement Plan, consisting of a PowerPoint presentation and Excel spreadsheet

Goal

Your group will submit a proposal for a Safety Improvement Plan, consisting of a PowerPoint presentation and Excel spreadsheet (files) with your analysis of incidents that occurred at NAIT from July 2014 – June 2019. Note that this is five years’ worth of data based on NAIT’s fiscal year being July to June.

Purpose

As a safety professional you will often be asked to track incidents that occur. The simple act of recording the incidents is an administrative job, but how OHS professionals create value is by being able to analyze that data and provide specific, tangible recommendations to reduce the number and/or severity of incidents.

Guiding Questions for Analysis (Do not simply list the answers to all these questions in your PowerPoint!)

What subsets (e.g. students/employee/contractors, division 1/2/3/…) have a higher rate of injury?

What nature of injuries (e.g. burn, cut, strain) should be emphasized in a safety blitz?

Which divisions should receive more safety training, and on what topics?

Are injuries more likely during certain times of the day/month/year? How has it changed (year-over-year)?

What are the causes of the serious injuries (i.e. medical aid and lost-time)? Do they differ for minor injuries?

Guiding Questions for Recommendations

What additional PPE should be purchased?

What training or demonstrations should be conducted?

What safety messages should be communicated through posters?

What topics should be discussed at safety briefings, and when?

What additional information should be collected, or what database integrity issues are there?
