ACTIVITY 02
Complete the following tasks.
1. Switch
Review switch knowledge in Week 3: for a switch table (for example, see below) explain how a port of the switch can be assigned/linked to different clients for data transmission. List as many scenarios as possible.
Then investigate the following scenario:
Your laptop (00-14-22-01-23-45) links to a switch, which connects to a router (00-04-DC- 53-3D-4F) and another PC (00-40-96-5D-42-22). The initial switching table is as follows:
After the following events occur:
• The entry for 00-40-96-5D-42-22 expired;
• Reconnect your laptop(00-14-22-01-23-45) to Port 2;
• A new virtualised machine (00-38-6B-00-28-0C) is created in your laptop.
Show the switching table that you’d expect to see at the end of these events by completing the table below.
2. Router
Viewing the routing tables by using the command “route print”, then discuss five different columns:
• Network Destination
• Netmask
• Gateway
• Interface
• Metric
Compare the information provided by ipconfig (ipconfig /all) to the information stored in the routing table.
3. WiFi
Assume you plan to provide a free WiFi service in your coffee shop. List and discuss what wireless settings can help you to build an efficient and secure WLAN for your business.
4. NIC
Search three different types of network interface card based on different bus types on the internet:
• Compare the maximum transfer rates
• What’s the bus size of each type of NIC
• The common use of each type of NIC
Then, discuss the following advanced features of NICs
• Shared adapter/system memory
• Onboard co-processors
• Remotely power on a PC by accessing NIC through network.
